Sweet Church was built in 1875 by George Harvey. The non-denominational church originally known as Jefferson Union Township Church became known as Sweet Church over the years, named after James Sweet who donated the land and settled nearby.
In 2001, after the church sat abandoned and subject to vandalism for decades, a group from the farming community decided to take action. The church was purchased and restoration began.
In 2002 the group formed the non-profit Sweet Church Community Organization.
In October 2003 the first Sweet Church Homecoming was held. The highlight was the re-dedication of the restored church brass bell and after 50 years of silence the bell now rings strong and clear.
